BARF and Homes for Our Troops

The following was submitted to the Wharton Journal-Spectator on Feb 21,2013:

One of the most fulfilling things a person can do is give back to the
community. Bay Area Recreational Flyers did just that at our meeting on
February 16 th at the Wharton Airport. Homes For Our troops, HFOT, is the
organization we chose to give our annual contribution. It was our honor to
have their representative Ivonne Thompson and her husband, Navy Corpsman HM2
Anthony “Doc” Thompson, and their son AJ. come to the meeting. Anthony was
on assignment in Fallujah Iraq when a bomb went off and everything changed.
Ivonne told the complete story of Anthony’s training as a corpsman in the
Navy, their marriage and getting pregnant before his second deployment.
Anthony was injured and spent almost 3 years in various hospitals before
HFOT provided a permanent residence that would meet their needs. His new
home provided by HFOT will allow his special care to continue and have his
wife and son live with him.

We are a group of airplane enthusiasts that meet monthly at the airport to
fly and educate ourselves about aviation. This year the normal fund raising
event for Homes For Our Troops was cancelled in Houston so we decided to do
what we could here in Wharton. We voted as a group to donate funds from our
treasury and then raised a total contribution of $1,000.00 for the
organization.  We were sincerely touched by this remarkable story and by
Ivonne’s love for her husband and son. We were able to give AJ a ride on a
powered parachute and a flight in a Cessna 172.

The events of the day reminded me of Dr. Benjamin Carson saying, “A generous
man will prosper; he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed.”
