The BARF February 18th meeting is at 11:00 AM, Chambers County Airport T00, in Anahuac TX.

The airport offers a large grass strip and nearby sights of Trinity Bay and Lake Anahuac. That is where the gators will be hiding, the hogs running, and the swamp boats skimming across the tall grass.

This is a fun flying area with lots to see.

The Rotorcraft – Gyro pilots will not meet at this location on Feb 18th. But, they will let us use their hanger for the meeting and lunch. So, we will have the airport to ourselves.

Plan to fly Friday to Sunday.

Dry camping at the airport.

Directions: Interstate 10 East from Houston to FM 563. Turn right (south) on 563, go about 4 miles until the stop sign at road 61. Turn left (east) on 61 and go about ½ mile, the airport is on the right. We will park at the west end of the runway where there is lots of pavement and the grass strip is close by.

The long hot, dry summer is cooling down and it’s time to fly. The Vanderpool Fly-In is scheduled for October 13th thru the 16th. Bob Casperis has graciously allowed us to fly from his open pasture about 2 miles north of Vanderpool, TX. The field is also about 3 miles south of “Lost Maples State Park”. Due to the drought, I’m not sure of the tree and water conditions in the area, but this a great place to visit. There is one hotel in Vanderpool.
Directions to Vanderpool:
I’ve attached a PDF map from the “Lost Maples State Park” that shows the roads to Vanderpool, TX which is also 13 miles East of Leakey, TX.
From Houston take I-10, and 90 to Sabinal, then North on 187 passed Utopia and Vanderpool to the field on the left. If you reach the State Park, you went too far north.
From the North East, you can go to Boerne, TX, then to Pipe Creek, Bandera, and Medina on to 337 to Vanderpool. For more information, use a GPS, MapQuest, or a good Texas road map.

The September BARF meeting will be at the Chambers County Airport, TOO, in Anahuac TX, September 17 th at 11 AM. http://www.airnav.com/airport/T00

The Anahuac Gatorfest is that weekend, September 16 – 18th. http://www.texasgatorfest.com/

This is a great place to fly, lots of interesting waterways, landscape, and of course, GATORS.

The festival is held during gator hunting season to award prizes for the biggest gators. http://www.alligatorhunting.net/alligator-hunting-texas/

I just want to fly over, take pictures, and wave at the gators, thank you. Photo-ops are available with the big gators caught but not for me, maybe the other L.H. will do it again.

The airport has a big hanger we can use – and we will have company. The PRA Chap 62 (Gyroplane) group will be there too. This should be interesting.

Original email from Steve Weir:

Hi, my name is Steve Weir and I am with the PRA Chap 62 (Gyroplane) here in the Houston area. We will have a fly-in at Anahuac T00 on the Gatorfest weekend and would love to have you guys join us. We are located in the hanger by the fuel pumps. After having been to Mentone, Indiana the last couple of years and joining in with the powered parachute folks there we would like to see you here in Anahuac on the September 16,17,18 weekend.

Our website is: http://www.gyrosaway.com

Hope to see you there! Please contact me if you have any questions.

Steve Weir

832-457-1785

See you in Anahuac for the meeting,

Lowell.

In some discussions on the forums, I keep seeing people refer to minimum altitudes of 500’ or 1000’ depending on if you’re in a congested area. I’m not sure that most people know the FAA changed the rules for us over a year ago. I recommend printing this and keeping it in your PPC:

Sec. 91.119 — Minimum safe altitudes: General.
Except when necessary for takeoff or landing, no person may operate an aircraft below the following altitudes:

(a) Anywhere. An altitude allowing, if a power unit fails, an emergency landing without undue hazard to persons or property on the surface.

(b) Over congested areas. Over any congested area of a city, town, or settlement, or over any open air assembly of persons, an altitude of 1,000 feet above the highest obstacle within a horizontal radius of 2,000 feet of the aircraft.

(c) Over other than congested areas. An altitude of 500 feet above the surface, except over open water or sparsely populated areas. In those cases, the aircraft may not be operated closer than 500 feet to any person, vessel, vehicle, or structure.

(d) Helicopters, powered parachutes, and weight-shift-control aircraft. If the operation is conducted without hazard to persons or property on the surface—

(1) A helicopter may be operated at less than the minimums prescribed in paragraph (b) or (c) of this section, provided each person operating the helicopter complies with any routes or altitudes specifically prescribed for helicopters by the FAA; and

(2) A powered parachute or weight-shift-control aircraft may be operated at less than the minimums prescribed in paragraph (c) of this section.

[Docket No. 18334, 54 FR 34294, Aug. 18, 1989, as amended by Amdt. 91–311, 75 FR 5223, Feb. 1, 2010]
