There was a lively discussion of gasoline fuel filter failures causing engine outs. This brought out the fact that Rotax does not like the paper filters used on their engines. “A suitable fuel filter of 0,15mm mesh size must be fitted between pump and carburetor. Do not use paper filters.”
Also, the use of a valve on the gas line from the tank to the motor may be a good idea. Rotax demands this valve if the tank is higher than the carburetor, “If the fuel tank is placed higher than the carburetor, the tank connection must have a fuel cock (with filter) to shut off the fuel supply when the engine is not running…. National regulations may require a fuel cock to be fitted even if the fuel tank is below the carburetor. The carburetor needle valve is not to be used as a fuel cock.” pg 15-2 Rotax Installation Manuel for 582.
A discussion and clarification of insurance coverage by the EAA of our events and for individual purchase for aircraft owners. For individuals, the EAA lists insurance on their site, http://www.eaa.org/news/2008/2008-04-08_insurance.asp , and an independent insurance site, http://www.morrowinsuranceagency.com/id19.html .
Thanks to Jack Fleetwood, word got out to other PPC pilots about the BARF meeting in central Texas. We gained four new members from the area: Craig McPherson, Bruce Dewkett, Danal Estes, and Paul Burnette. We learned that Craig McPherson CFI of Blum TX is available for LSA maintenance and repairs, biennial flight reviews, annual inspections, etc. His Blue Skies PPC web site is: http://blueskiesppc.com/about.html .
Safety:
Bill Alcorn talked about his new iPad that has GPS. What a gadget, and it takes great pictures too. He has a dashboard mount for the plane and truck and will always know where he is on the map. But Bill, don’t forget the GPS override….. always bring Margarette with you.

Respectfully,
Margo Henderson

Safety: The Smithville Fly In will forever be the Fly Your Wheels Off Fly In. Pilots are reminded to preflight their wheels and axle nuts in the check of their plane prior to takeoff. No one was injured when the rear wheel came off of a plane while landing and the plane was not damaged. However, a fellow pilot was called upon to give up his right nut until the plane was properly repaired. Our group is known for taking care of our fellow pilots.
